The Bradford Youth Orchestra is Bradford’s top youth ensemble, offering a fantastic opportunity for aspiring young players to play in a full symphony orchestra run by an experienced and dynamic team of tutors.
Entry to this ensemble Orchestra is by audition only.
Conducted by Morgan Griffiths, they regularly appear at venues around the Bradford District, including St. George’s Hall, and bi- annually tour abroad to great acclaim. This year they went to Lake Garda.
Together with some pupils from Newby Primary School, they have performed in Birmingham’s Symphony Hall as part of the Music For Youth National Festival, where they won an Innovation Award.
They have worked alongside the Southbank Sinfonia, a professional London orchestra, where they have played together and benefited from rehearsals and masterclasses from their players.
They collaborate with a variety of different groups, including with Bollywood Dancers for a vibrant rendition of Carmen – the dancers re-enacted the Bollywood Carmen to the Toreador’s Song.
The orchestra is continuously developing the type of experiences it offers its players; past fun events include a flashmob to support the Healthy Heart campaign last year and a large scale event where the students performed to primary school pupils, introducing their own instruments.
The highlight for the orchestra was a performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London in Music for Youth’s School Proms, where, as well as forming part of a massed performance with 600 players performing a folk inspired piece, they were also asked to play for the ‘Last Night of the Proms’ part at the end of the concert – a real honour.
Other concerts have included a Remembrance concert and a Last Night of the Proms concert.
The orchestra is recognised for the high quality of its performances. Audience feedback is always hugely positive, with comments about the energy of the orchestra and the vibrancy of their playing.
Playing for the orchestra is a great opportunity for young musicians to work with a professional conductor on some great music.
Repertoire played by the orchestra ranges from classical pieces, to musicals and film scores, which the students particularly enjoy!
Some students in the orchestra attend the Yorkshire Young Musicians or Bradford Music & Arts Service’s Delius School, both of which are for gifted and talented young players. Several members have gone on to study music at university and this year we are proud that two of our players have been successful in gaining a place at The Guildhall School of Music in London – a music conservatoire – no mean feat!
Recent repertoire includes: Dvorak New World Symphony, Phantom of the Opera, Gladiator
