The Bradford Youth Orchestra is Bradford’s top youth ensemble, offering a fantastic opportunity for aspiring young musicians to play in a full symphony orchestra run by an experience and dynamic team of tutors. It is recognized for the high quality of its performances.
Audience feedback is always hugely positive, with comments about the energy of the orchestra and the vibrancy of their playing.
Conducted by Ben Crick, the orchestra regularly appear at venues around the Bradford District, including St. George’s Hall, and bi-annually tour abroad to great acclaim.
The orchestra has also performed at Music for Youth events, including at Symphony Hall in Birmingham. One of the highlights was a performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London in Music for Youth’s Schools’ Proms, where, as well as forming part of a massed performance with 600 players performing a folk inspired piece, they were also asked to play for the Last Night of the Proms part of the concert – a real honour.
The Bradford Youth Orchestra takes part in many collaborative projects. Examples include working with the Southbank Sinfonia, a professional London orchestra, with Soul Band Normanton Street where they provided the backing for some of the songs on their new album and with Bollywood dancers for a vibrant rendition of Carmen; the Toreador’s Song.
In addition to regular performances and project work, the orchestra is continually developing the type of experiences it offers its players.
Past events include a flash mob to support the Healthy Heart campaign, large scale events where students presented their instruments to hundreds of primary school pupils and playing in Broadway shopping centre for BBC Music Day. This year the string section of the orchestra is working with an ex-leader of the orchestra who is now an international electric violinist and will perform Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit.
Playing with the orchestra is a great opportunity for young musicians to work with a professional conductor on some great music. Repertoire ranges from classical pieces to musicals and film scores. Recent pieces have included Children of Sanchez, Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet and Empire Strikes Back.
Many students from the orchestra have gone on to study music at conservatoire and university level.
Entry to the Bradford Youth Orchestra is by audition only, players of all orchestral instruments of Grade 5 and above.
