BBC 10 Pieces Project

Ten Pieces aims to inspire a generation of children to get creative with classical music.

Building on the success of BBC Music’s Ten Pieces which had already engaged more than half of UK primary schools, the BBC extended the ground-breaking music education initiative to secondary schools. The aim iwas to open up the world of classical music to children aged 11 and above, inspiring them to respond creatively to the repertoire.

The film stars the BBC Philharmonic playing side-by-side with members of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, and soloists Nicola Benedetti, Alison Balsom, and DJ Mr Switch. It showcases the ten pieces of music that are the basis of the project – representing a wide range of styles and eras relevant to the secondary music curriculum.

Each piece is introduced by celebrities, including: Radio 1 DJ Clara Amfo, actor Christopher Eccleston, rapper and comedian Doc Brown, singer Pixie Lott, ex-footballer and TV pundit Dion Dublin, poet and broadcaster Lemn Sissay, star of “Wolfblood” Bobby Lockwood, comedian Vikki Stone and TV presenters James May, Naomi Wilkinson and Molly Rainford.

An inspirational new cinematic film will feature stunning footage of the BBC Philhamonic Orchestra performing a new selection of orchestral music, representing a wide range of styles and eras relevant to the music curriculum. Each piece will be introduced by celebrity presenters known to the age group, using an engaging mix of live action and animation.

Ambassadors:

Ten Pieces Ambassadors(link is external) will continue to work with the project across the country – violinist Nicola Benedetti, trumpeter Alison Balsom, jazz pianistJulian Joseph, singer and BBC Radio 6 Music presenter Cerys Matthews, harpist Catrin Finch, and BBC Radio 3 presenter Suzy Klein. New Ambassadors joining the project for secondary schools will include cellistJulian Lloyd Webber, 19 year old Co-Principal Trombonist of the London Symphony Orchestra and former BBC Young Musician Peter Moore, electronic band Clean Bandit, and musician, producer and composer Nitin Sawhney.

  8. Mussorgsky: A Night on the Bare Mountain
  9. Stravinsky: The Firebird – suite (1911) (Finale)
  10. Anna Meredith: Connect It

Pupils around the UK have been inspired by the Ten Pieces of classical music and have been creating their own responses to the music.

A video-rich interactive guide to the orchestra for 7 to 11 year olds that complements Ten Pieces.

Barney Harwood from Blue Peter introduces the families of instruments, and professional musicians from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales explain how their instruments work and make sounds.

Children can test their knowledge with fun quizzes and learn some basics about music notation in an interactive game with the motif from Beethoven’s 5th Symphony. Unusual facts about the instruments will engage young readers.
