Updated guidance for schools regarding DBS checks for Bradford Council staff
It has come to our attention that some schools are concerned that they may be asked for DBS clearances by members of Ofsted inspection teams. In response to this we have checked directly with Ofsted and they have made it absolutely clear that this is not a requirement. If queries do arise during an Ofsted inspection, please refer inspectors to the relevant paragraph (see below), if in doubt to telephone the duty HMI at Ofsted on 08456 404045.
It is not appropriate for our members of staff to provide you with a copy of their DBS disclosure. Please refer to the DfE publication on Safeguarding Children and Safer Recruitment in Education.
“4.76. Individuals such as psychologists, nurses, dentists and centrally employed teachers will have been checked by their employing organisation, whether local authority, Primary Care Trust or Strategic Health Authority. It is not necessary for schools or FE colleges to see their DBS Disclosure as appropriate checks will have been carried out. Schools and FE colleges will however want to check identity when an individual arrives to ensure imposters do not gain access to children.”

Bradford Council is committed to safeguarding the welfare of children and young people. As part of this commitment all Bradford Council staff that come into schools are rigorously vetted; a process which includes the use of enhanced DBS disclosures where appropriate.
All Bradford Council staff carry a company identification badge when visiting schools, this includes their DBS number and expiry date. Please ensure that you ask our colleagues to present them on arrival at school to confirm their identity. If you have any concerns regarding whether an individual is a genuine Bradford Council employee, or have any concerns regarding child protection then please do not hesitate to contact the relevant department at Bradford Council.
